ABSTRACT A process for the treatment of proteinaceous materials selected from blood, meat, bone and carcass waste which comprises subjecting the material to enzymatic hydrolysis with at least one protease and/or at least one amylase having proteolytic activity and in the presence of urea whereby decomposition of the material is effected; and subsequently inactivating the protease or amylase. The material can be subjected to a protein denaturing step prior to the hydrolysis In this manner protein hydrolysates, suitable for example for animal nutrition, may be obtained from proteinaceous waste material from slaughtered animals.
