An improved long distance service network includes at least one verifying means which, in combination with a portable subscriber identifying device, allows a telephone call to be completed through the network, from or to any remote location served by the network, provided that the subscriber identifying device confirms that at least one of the originator or recipient of the call is a subscriber. In one embodiment the security information, which consists of a multi digit security number produced by the identifying device and a unique serial number assigned to the identifying device, is entered by the subscriber via the touch tone keypad of a telephone. In another embodiment, the necessary security information is transmitted directly through the handset of the telephone via an acoustic or inductive coupler or the like. In another embodiment of the present invention, a voice recognition system is employed to respond to the security number and serial number as spoken by the subscriber. The verifying means, which is preferably attached to at least one telecommunications switch in the network, confirms the status of the subscriber based upon the received security information and allows the call to be completed if at least one of the originator or recipient of the call is a valid subscriber. In another embodiment, the extent and type of access provided the subscriber is also verified by the verifying means and the call is completed or inhibited, as appropriate.
