2051402 9012446 PCTABS00002 A controller for an electric motor comprises a voltage controlled oscillator circuit (10) the output of which is transformed into a triangular waveform by a waveform generator (12). The output of the generator is applied to one input of a comparator (14). The other input is supplied with an error signal (e) signifying the difference between demanded output and actual output. To lessen the acoustic noise from the controller the period and amplitude of the output of the oscillator, and hence the waveform generator, are varied by a pseudo-random sequence generator (18) which is connected to the oscillator. The output of the comparator is a variable mark/space ratio rectangular wave.
