An apparatus for use in conjunction with a transurethral radio frequency (RF) ablation electrode insertable into a patient's prostate region to ablate prostate tissue by delivering RF current therethrough. The apparatus comprises an RF generator for outputting RF current through the ablation electrode and a second electrode in contact with the patient. The RF current is sufficient to ablate prostate tissue disposed between the ablation and second electrodes. Processing circuitry controls delivery of RF current by the RF generator. An infusion pump pumps a fluid into the prostate region, the infusion pump is responsive to commands generated by the processing circuitry to pump the fluid at a controlled rate.
