An application controller is used with a two-way wireless messaging system (100). The application controller is distributed among a plurality of communication units (121-128) associated with the two-way wireless messaging system. The application controller is capable of controlling cooperative communication among ones of the communication units (121-128) in accordance with a prescribed application task, and comprises a data repository (325), first and second communication controllers (310 and 410), and an operations controller (10). The data repository (325) maintains at least one subscriber profile. The first communication unit controller (310) senses change in a characteristic monitored at a first communication unit (124), wherein the monitored characteristic is evaluated in accordance with the prescribed application task, and, in response thereto, automatically causes the first communication unit to transmit a first signal.
