ABSTRACT The bath electrolyte of an electrolytic cell for the production of aluminium consists of sodium cryolite with minor additions of fluorides of one or more other alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The additional fluoride content of the bath electrolyte and/or the cell voltage is ad- justed in accordance with the value of the additional fluoride content of the bath determined by reference to the concentrations of sodium and of the additional metal in the aluminium product of the cell, these concentrations being routinely measured in cell operation.
