The invention provides a method and apparatus for controlling traffic congestion in an intelligent telecommunications network in which subscriber services are provided and which has a plurality of nodes or service switching points (11) and a service control point (13). The service control point (13) includes a central processing unit (15) which monitors the moving average of the traffic profile passing through each mode for particular dialled numbers of the subscriber services. The central processing unit (15) is programmed to detect when congestion occurs, to determine whether the congestion is caused by a sudden change in the profile for a particular dialled number or by a general overload of traffic at the service control point, and to generate congestion control signals which, in turn, are sent from the service control point (13) to the service switching points (11) where admission controls (12) are used for throttling or limiting the traffic through the service switching points (11).

Cette invention concerne un procédé et un appareil de régulation des encombrements de trafic dans un réseau de télécommunications intelligent qui offre des services abonnés et qui comporte une pluralité de noeuds ou points de commutation de service (11) et un point de commande de service (13). Le point de commande de service (13) comporte une unité centrale de traitement (15) qui surveille la moyenne glissante du profil de trafic traversant chaque noeud et correspondant à des numéros appelés particuliers des services abonnés. L'unité centrale de traitement (15) est programmée pour déceler la survenue d'un encombrement, pour déterminer si ledit encombrement est dû à un changement soudain du profil associé à un numéro appelé particulier ou à une surcharge générale du trafic en ce point de commande de service, et pour générer des signaux de régulation de l'encombrement qui, l'un après l'autre, sont transférés du point de commande de service (13) vers les points de commutation de service (11) dans desquels on utilise des commandes d'admission (12) pour étrangler ou réduire le trafic au niveau de ces points de commutation de service (11).
