A process and apparatus for converting carbon or carbonated compounds in a plasma into carbons having a defined nanostructure consists of a reaction chamber whose head part contains three electrodes, a plasma gas supply and a carbon or carbonated compound supply is disclosed. The process and apparatus of the present invention allows for very precise control of plasma conditions resulting in a controlled production of carbons with a narrow distribution of carbon particles, not previously available.
