The invention relates to a process for converting hydrogen sulfide to sulfur and hydrogen. The hydrogen sulfide gas is contacted with a quinone in an aqueous solvent containing a sulfur complexing agent to yield sulfur and the corresponding hydroquinone. The hydroquinone is convened back to quinone and hydrogen. The quinone is recycled and the hydrogen gas and sulfur is collected. The invention also discloses a range of ratios of complexing agent to quinone which produces an unexpected yield for the disclosed reaction.

L'invention porte sur une méthode pour convertir le sulfure d'hydrogène en soufre et en hydrogène. Le sulfure d'hydrogène est mis en contact avec une quinone dans un solvant aqueux renfermant un agent de complexation du soufre, pour donner du soufre et l'hydroquinone correspondante. Celle-ci redonne de la quinone et de l'hydrogène. La quinone est recyclée; l'hydrogène gazeux et le soufre sont récupérés. L'invention présente également une série de rapports agent de complexation/quinone donnant un rendement inattendu pour la réaction de l'invention.
