Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a process for effectively and completely reforming into a useful hydrocarbon oil(such as naphtha, kerosene and gas oil with high cracking rate) tar-sand bitumen and vacuum residues from various petroleum origins, which are difficult to treat in comparison with ordinary crude oil and which contain large amounts of asphaltenes and resins. The process of this invention is a combined process of thermal cracking and hydrocracking. The present invention is useful for the manufacture of pollution-free product oil from tar-sand bitumen and vacuum residues from various petroleum origins with a high desulfurization percentage of more than 90%. The product oil can be used as a superior fuel oil having low sulfur and metal contents, and also as the starting material for secondary processing.
