A converter having an exterior shell formed of a strong, heat resistant, weldable metal; at least two catalyst beds within said shell, one above the other; each catalyst bed having a support plate for the catalyst thereof; a division plate between said beds, said support and division plates extending to and being sealingly secured to said shell, said division plate and said support plate of said one bed defining a space therebetween, said shell having an opening therein below said support plate of said one bed for flow of gas between said space and the exterior of said converter, the improvement comprising said converter having at least two internal heat exchanger means aligned axially within said shell, each of said heat exchanger means being associated with its single said catalyst bed to provide each of said beds with its own inter-bed heat exchange means; and each of said beds having an upper plenum and a lower plenum through which gases operably pass. The converter provides improved corrosion resistance and, thus, extended life, as well as improved efficiency in the heat exchange steps while reducing internal pressure losses and improved process control over a broad range of gas strengths.
Convertisseur ayant une coque extérieure formée d'un métal robuste, soudable, résistant à la chaleur; au moins deux lits catalyseurs sont situés dans la même coque, l'un au-dessus de l'autre, chaque lit de catalyseur ayant une plaque de support de catalyseur; une plaque de séparation entre les deux lits, ledit support et les plaques de division se prolongeant jusqu'à la coque et étant scellées sur celle-ci, ladite plaque de division et la dite plaque de support d'un des lits définissant un espace entre les deux, ladite coque comprenant une ouverture au-dessous de la plaque support d'un des lits pour l'écoulement des gaz entre ledit espace et l'extérieur du convertisseur, l'amélioration comprenant ledit convertisseur ayant au moins deux moyens internes d'échange de chaleur éloignés axialement à l'intérieur de ladite coque, chacun desdits moyens d'échange de chaleur étant associé à son lit catalyseur pour assurer à chacun des lits son propre moyen d'échange de chaleur entre lits, chacun desdits lits ayant un plénum supérieur et un plénum inférieur à travers desquels circulent les gaz. Le convertisseur présente une résistance accrue à la corrosion et, par conséquent, une durée de vie prolongée et une meilleur efficacité du point de vue de l'échange de chaleur tout en réduisant les chutes de pression internes, en plus d'assurer un meilleur contrôle de procédé pour une vaste plage de concentrations de gaz.
