A convertible lift mechanism (10) for lifting an object from a first surface (12) to a vertically displaced second surface (14) includes a source of motive force (11), a conversion stair (16a-16f), and a lift linkage (13). The convertible lift mechanism (10) may be utilized as a platform lift (74) or a wheelchair lift. The conversion stair (16a-16f) has a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration, the conversion stair has a substantially horizontal lifting surface (44) movable between a first position and a second position. The substantially horizontal lifting surface (44) forms at least a portion of a lift platform (74).
