This invention solves problems encountered in driving conveyor belts where mating belt drive engagement surfaces, sprocket drive surfaces, pivot rods and pivot rod surfaces all interact to cause wear and unreliablity in belt operation. Pivot rods are removably confined to prevent linear movement out of the belt due to conditions encountered in operation with corresponding interference or failure. Driving engagement is improved for variously shaped modular belt.links with drive surfaces extending from cylindrical structure about the pivot rod journalling aperture to form drive surfaces for mating with sprocket teeth. Dynamically moving sprocket drive surfaces interact between substantially radially disposed parallel drive planes on both the sprocket and the belt modules, thereby to avoid radially directed forces that drive the belt away from the drive sprocket to cause wear and unreliability. Trapezoidal shaped mating drive teeth upon the modules extend from a generally cylindrical body about the pivot rod. Sprocket drive teeth engage respective ones of such trapezoidal drive teeth on different end to end intercoupled modular links so that the belt may be driven in opposite directions. At the belt edge, one of two different pivot rod retention cap embodiments swivels elastically away from the normal pivot rod axis position retaining a pivot rod in place to permit pivot rods to be inserted or removed.
