A coolant pump seal for an internal combustion engine in which the main seal that slides on the shaft is preceded on the coolant side by a protective seal. The protective seal consists of a filter fleece and is secured to the housing that supports the main seal by means of a support ring which holds the protective seal and which is secured to the housing by a plug connection on a side thereof facing cooling water in the pump.
