ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The wall of a metallurgical furnace is arranged such that cooling plates having coolant tubes and preferably made of cast iron, have cast-in spacer bosses each with a threaded protrusion for securing the respective plate to an exterior steel jacket of the wall. There are not fastener bolts passing through the entire thickness of the cooling plate as in prior art. The advance is in that the fastener bolts are less subject to damage as the wear of the interior surface of the wall proceeds. The invention also facilitates the construction of the wall as the inside fireproof lining can be applied regardless of the actual arrange- ment of the cooling plates since no portion of the fasteners protrudes interiorly of the surface of the cooling plate.
