380-78-0140 COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINE HAVING LOW FRICTION CURTAINS TO PROTECT THE WAY SURFACES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A coordinate measuring machine in which a low friction curtain protects ways and the measuring gratings from debris, damage and resulting measurement inaccuracies. The low friction is obtained by supporting the curtain on a fluid film at its mounting to a support carried by the base. Advantageously, the machine includes a horizontally moving carriage moves along horizontal ways on a base and the base includes a support at the ends of the ways. Curtains made of flexible material are attached to the carriage and extend over the supports. The support is preferably coupled to a source of fluid under pressure, which source is coupled to provide a fluid film between the curtain and the support.
