ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There are disclosed a copolymer having a secondary amino group such as an alkylpiperazino group or having a formamide group which is introduced via imide group in the side chains of various high polymers and a process for producing the above copolymer by reacting a starting copolymer having the repeating unit originating from an acid anhydride (e.g. maleic anhydride) with a salt of a specific amine (e.g. piperazine derivative) in the presence or absence of a formyl group-containing compound (e.g. formamide) to imidize the starting copolymer and further removing the acid with a base, or by imidizing the starting copolymer with the reaction product between the specific amine and the formyl group- containing compound. The above copolymer is usable for high molecular amino reagents, raw materials for functional high polymers, raw materials for additives, compatibilizers for polymers, resin dyeing improvers, epoxy resin curing agent, resin modifiers, etc.
