A copolymer useful as a viscosity index improving additive for hydraulic fluids includes from about 55 wt% to about 99.5 wt% alkyl ester repeating units of the structural formula: Image wherein each occurrence of R1 is H or methyl and each occurrence of R2 is independently selected from the group consisting of (C8-C15)alkyl; and from about 0.5 wt% to about 45 wt% repeating units selected from alkyl ester repeating units having (C1)alkyl groups, (C4)alkyl groups, (C16-C24)alkyl groups and mixtures thereof.
