ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The composite powder is produced by dispersing solid particles of a core material in an aqueous ammoniacal ammonium salt solution in which the particles are insoluble and which contains dissolved nickel values. The core material may be composed of a non-metal, a metal alloy or an elementary metal lower than copper in the electromotive series. The resulting slurry is reacted with a reducing gas at elevated temperature and pressure to cause nickel to precipitate from solution and to coat the dispersed particles. The reaction is terminated when the weight of the nickel coating the dispersed particles is substantially the molecular equivalent of the weight of copper desired in the coating of the finished composite powder. The nickel-coated particles are then dispersed in a solution having a pH no higher than about 7 and containing dissolved copper values and the last mentioned solution is contacted with hydrogen gas under a pressure of from about 50 to about 500 psig to cause the copper values to cement onto the core particles with concurrent dissolution of substantially the entire nickel coating. The resulting composite powder consists of core par- ticles coated with a continuous layer of copper of substantially uniform thickness.
