ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A modified fibrous material comprising cellulose fibers substituted at their cellulose anhydroglucose units by anionic moieties of at least one of the for- mulae: -PO3H(-); -(CH2)n-PO3H(-); -(CH2)n-SO3(-); or (CH2)n-COO(-); where n is from 1 to 3; and capped by copper cations to the extent that said cellulose fibers bind from about 0.1 to about 3.0% by weight of copper, based on the weight of said fibers; as well as pro- cesses for its production.
