ABSTRACT Heavy oil is upgraded to produce high quality synthetic crude oil, using coal as an adjuvant. The heavy oil is fractionated to recover light distillate fractions (plus diluent if added to the heavy oil to improve its pipeline flowability) and heavy residuum. The residuum is combined with a minor proportion of prepared coal having low moisture and ash content, pumped to reaction pressure and preheated to reaction temperature. The coal is solubilized in the oil in a coal solubilization reactor in which a first stage of hydrogenation takes place, and the resultant solubilized coal/heavy oil residuum mixture is further hydrogenated to provide light distillate raw products and an unconverted coal/heavy oil residue. The distillate products from the heavy oil fractionation and coal/heavy oil hydrogenation steps are hydrotreated to remove undesirable contaminants (sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen) and improve their stability and quality. The hydrotreated fractions are combined to form a high quality synthetic crude oil (distillate) product which can be processed efficiently by a petroleum refiner to yield high quality transportation fuels. The coal/heavy oil residue is combusted in a fluid bed combustion unit to generate high pressure steam for use within the processing facility, or fed to a hydrocoking unit to yield additional distillate products and low quality coke.
