ABSTRACT A grass-cutting appliance has a handle and a driven rotary cutting head comprising a flexible cord-like cutting element the end-section of which projects from the periphery of the housing within which the cord is wound on a spool. The cord is lengthened by a specific amount, when it becomes worn during use, by means of a clutch associated with the spool and the housing, the spool rotating through a specific angle in relation to the housing. The clutch is moved from the locked position to the released position automatically when the cord cutting element is too short and an incremental length of cord is paid off from the spool.
