A B S T R A C T A cordless telephone includes a fixed unit and a portable unit which are communicatable with each other over a radio link. The portable unit has a rechargeable battery and a battery saving circuit responsive to a control signal for inter, rupting power supply to predetermined sections of the portable unit. The fixed unit has a charging circuit for converting an AC voltage into a DC voltage to produce a charging voltage. The fixed unit also has a detector for detecting that the battery of the portable unit is being charged by the charging voltage and outputting a detect signal. Finally, the fixed unit has a supply circuit responsive to the detect signal for outputting the control signal and supplying the control signal to the portable unit together with the charging voltage.
