Abstract of the Disclosure Disclosed is a light-water nuclear reactor particularly useful for ship propulsion power which involves high load change rates. The reactor includes a core control system which can be realized with a small expenditure of mechanical and control-engineering means, without thereby making the maximum power form factors larger and the minimum DNBR smaller. In addition, an almost linear control characteristic is made possible. The control rods, which are insertable and movable in the core's axial direction, via one side of the core, are combined with an arrangement of fixed neutron poison rods of various lengths which are concentrated in the core's axial direction on the opposite side of the core. The poison rods and control rods are interrelated so that for all control rod positions which occur in power operation, the maximum power form factor for all these control rod positions viewed together is lower than it would be without the use of the burnable neutron poisons, Control rod drives are interconnected so as to form a small number of banks (of which only one is needed for control during normal operation) that are each of them jointly moved. The arrangement allows of much quicker load changes than were possible with the known devices, a point that is of special importance in marine engineering.
