ABSTRACT This invention relates to a manually operated tool for cutting and removing a core of earth containing the roots of a weed or otherwise undesirable plant. It is common in devices for removing weeds that they require that the person pulling the weeds grasp and pull the weed with the hand which is not operating the tool. It is common in devices for removing weeds that the process requires that, while digging down with the tool to loosen and pry up the root of the weed, the weedpicker must grasp and pull the weed with the hand not operating the tool. This procedure is unsatisfactory for several reasons. The weedpicker must either work on her/his knees or bend over a great deal so as to be able to grasp the weed. To grasp the weed, the weedpicker must dig his fingers into the earth which may be cold, wet, muddy, hard and/or abrasive. To pull the weed, the weedpicker must exert considerable force with his/her fingers. Grasping and pulling the weed is very straining for the muscles, joints and tendons in the hand. Frequently, when pulling the weed by hand, while trying to pry up the root from below with other weed extraction implements, the root breaks just below where it is grasped and the root is left in the earth where it regenerates a new plant. These methods of weed removal are very tiresome and unpleasant and also involve considerable disturbance of the soil and are very damaging to the appearance of a lawn.
