A method for manufacturing a gasket includes the step of vulcanizing a mixture of nitrile butadiene rubber, ground cork, and a catalyst in a mold to form the gasket, so that between about 20 and about 45 percent by weight of the mixture is ground cork, and between about 45 and about 80 percent of the mixture is nitrile butadiene rubber. The ground cork has a particle size of less than 0.033 inch. The gasket produced by the method consists essentially of a single, uniformly distributed vulcanite of nitrile butadiene rubber and ground cork.
