A method and apparatus to alter the shape of the cornea of an eye provide for heating (44) a portion of the cornea to a temperature not exceeding the collagen shrinkage temperature, applying a pressure differential (40) to a portion of the cornea. The combined effect of elevated temperature, and stretching forces leads to permanent residual strains in preferred directions, thus to a permanent new shape of the cornea. The method is applicable to the correction or reduction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif permettant de modifier la forme de la cornée. On chauffe (44) une partie de la cornée à une température n'excédant pas la température de retrait du collagène, en appliquant une pression différentielle (40) à une partie de la cornée. La combinaison entre l'élévation de température et les forces d'étirement résultant de la pression a pour effet d'exercer des contraintes résiduelles permanentes dans des directions préférées, donnant ainsi une nouvelle forme à la cornée. Le procédé est utilisable pour la correction ou la réduction de la myopie, de l'hypermétropie et de l'astigmatisme.
