Corner connection assembly for gondola cars having reduced car ends. The corner connection assembly includes a splice member for connecting the longitudinal upper side chords of the rail car to the end portions of upper side chords at a bend point. Wear protection assemblies are secured to exterior side wall of the rail car to protect the external heads of fastener elements securing an inside stake to the car side wall.
