ABSTRACT: In high voltage switches, metallic corona shields are used to reduce radiated electromag- netic energy which causes interference with radio and telephone communications. However, during switch closing, corona shield are subject to electrical arcing which can causes the formation of sharp pro- jections or asperities on the otherwise smooth surface of the corona shield especially if the corona shield is made of aluminum. These projections or asperities reduce the ability of the corona shield to prevent corona The present invention contemplates a thin coating of a material, such as molybdenum, on the corona shield This coating prevents the formation of projections or asperities on the corona shield. Moisture penetration of the molybdenum coating, should it be a problem, may be obviated by a layer of another material intermediate the molybdenum coating and the corona shield, or a substance which seals the pores of the molybdenum coating.
