A method of modelling a surface of an object by using ultrasonic waves transmitted along the surface comprises the steps of: transmitting the ultrasonic waves along paths along the surface, and determining travel times of the ultrasonic waves along the paths. At least some of the ultrasonic waves exhibit an S0 mode and have a frequency- dependent velocity. This velocity (c) is relatively high for frequencies up to a first bending point (BP1), decreasing relatively rapidly for frequencies between the first bending point (BP1) and a second bending point (BP2), and relatively low for frequencies beyond the second bending point (BP2). The ultrasonic waves have a frequency range which lies at or below the first bending point (BP1).

L'invention concerne un procédé de modélisation dune surface dun objet à laide dondes ultrasoniques émises le long de la surface, le procédé comportant les étapes consistant à : émettre les ondes ultrasoniques le long de trajets parcourant la surface et déterminer des temps de parcours des ondes ultrasoniques le long des trajets. Au moins une partie des ondes ultrasoniques présente un mode S0 et présente une vitesse de propagation dépendant de la fréquence. Cette célérité (c) est relativement élevée pour des fréquences allant jusquà un premier point dinflexion (BP1), diminue relativement rapidement pour des fréquences comprises entre le premier point dinflexion (BP1) et un deuxième point dinflexion (BP2), et est relativement faible pour des fréquences situées au-delà du deuxième point dinflexion (BP2). Les ondes ultrasoniques couvrent une plage de fréquence située au niveau ou en-deçà du premier point dinflexion (BP1).
