ABSTRACT A modular surgical implant having components made of titanium or titanium-based alloys is provided with a novel surface coating to prevent crevice and fretting corrosion of titanium components. The coating is a mixture of an oxide of platinum group metal and a biocompatible oxide or ceramic compound and is applied to the surface of titanium components, particularly in crevices to minimize metal-ion release.
