The apparatus includes a pallet of corrugated material such as cardboard or fibreboard. The pallet includes a horizontal load-bearing surface which is supported by a matrix of ground engaging runners. The runners in a first direction include upwardly facing slots while the runners in a second direction, perpendicular thereto, include downwardly facing slots. The upwardly facing slots inter-engage with the downwardly facing slots so that a matrix of runners is formed to support the horizontal load-bearing surface. The runners in the first direction are substantially identical to the runners in the second direction but for the orientation of the slots. Alternately, the runners in a first direction include alternating slots, whereas the runners in a second direction alternate between all slots being upwardly facing and all slots being downwardly facing. The runners in both directions include cut-outs for engaging the tines of a forklift. The pallet may also have a bottom member coupled with runners to facilitate the transport of the pallet on roller conveyors.
