J.6008 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A composition suitable for topical application to skin and hair comprising a physiologically acceptable carrier and 1-35% by weight of a salt of a monoester of citric acid. The hydrophobic group having an ester linkage to citric acid has 10 to 13 carbon atoms. Monoester of citric acid may be synthesized with low levels of di- and triester by forming citric acid anhydride and reacting this to form the monoester.
