ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a cosmetic compostion for the treatment of hair or skin, based on 0.05 to 10 wt.% of chitosan, including 0.05 to 20 wt.% of an ampholytic copolymer of the for- mula (I) Image where m is from 0.1 to 0.9, and n is 0.5 to 0.9. The composi- tions yield clear, smooth films which do not become sticky in a humid environment nor brittle in a dry one. The invention also relates to a new chitosan/polyampholyte salts which can be obtained by reacting chitosan with an ampholytic copolymer of the formula (I).
