A compound of structure (1), where R1 represents H- or acyl, R2 represents H- or -CH3, R3 represents H-, alkyl, other hydrocarbyl or a metallic, ammonium or alkanolammonium counterion, m is an integer of from 1 to 5, and R1 is acyl unless R3 is alkyl, is used in a cosmetic composition for topical application to the skin. The compound penetrates into the epidermis and is hydrolysed by esterases therein to form the corresponding glycolate or lactate of structure (2), where X represents -H or a counterion; which thereby serves as a moisturiser for the skin. Preferred compositions include an oil and/or organic solvent as well as water, and penetration of the compound of structure (1) may be achieved even when present at low concentration.

Composé de la structure (1), dans laquelle R<1> représente H- ou acyle, R<2> représente H- ou -CH3, R<3> représente H-, alkyle, un autre hydrocarbyle ou un contre-ion métallique, ammonium ou alcanolammonium, m représente un entier compris entre 1 et 5, R<1> représentant acyle sauf lorsque R<3> représente alkyle. Ce composé est utilisé dans une composition cosmétique destinée à une application topique sur la peau. Le composé pénètre dans l'épiderme où il est hydrolysé par des estérases pour former le glycolate ou lactate correspondant de la structure (2), dans laquelle X représente -H ou un contre-ion. Le composé agit ainsi comme hydratant pour la peau. Des compositions préférées comprennent une huile et/ou un solvant organique ainsi que de l'eau, le composé de structrure (1) pénètrant bien dans la peau même lorsqu'il est présent en faibles concentrations.
