A system for sorting and counting a plurality of items having an identifying device for transmitting an identifying code to the system includes a mechanical system, a scanner, and a computing system. The mechanical system transports and sorts the items. The scanner is associated with the mechanical system and is arranged and configured to recognize the identifying code associated with each of the items. The computing system is in electrical communication with the mechanical system and the scanner. The computing system is arranged and configured to receive the identifying code from the scanner; compare the identifying code to an inclusive list of values stored within the computing system; determine a sort classification for each of the items based on the inclusive list of values; and direct the mechanical system to sort each of the items based on the sort classification. Methods are also provided.
