A countertop construction having a lattice and a polyester resin which surrounds and penetrates the resin. The lattice has a first layer of parallel spaced apart slats. The lattice also has a second layer of parallel, spaced apart slats which is placed on top of the first layer such that each slat in the second layer is perpendicular to the slats of the first layer. The second layer is fastened to the first layer. The polyester resin surrounds and penetrates the lattice, and includes a filler. The countertop construction is relatively inexpensive, provides adequate protection against leaks, and has the added advantage of being able to be cut using standard cutting tools, such as a circular saw. Disclosed is also a method for building such a countertop construction.
