A counterweight assembly is provided to add weight over the steering wheels of a vehicle such as a front mount tractor when it is used on inclines or with heavy implements. The assembly includes a support bracket that is removably mountable on the rear of the vehicle frame adjacent the steering wheels. Receivable on the support are a plurality of counterweights and a hitch extension plate. The assembly is mounted within the turning circle of the vehicle and the counterweights are triangularly shaped to contain them within the turning circle as well. When used with a vehicle having the operator station facing away from the assembly, its containment within the turning circle serves to minimize the likelihood that it will make inadvertent contact with objects adjacent the work area of the vehicle.
