A counterweight for a spring activated drain pipe includes a hollow body having an exterior surface, an interior cavity, a first end, and a second end. A flow channel extends from the first end to the second end which has an inlet at the first end and an outlet at the second. A coupling is provided for connecting the inlet of the flow channel with a remote end of a drain pipe. A collection basin at the first end of the body surrounds the inlet of the flow channel. An inflow opening is provided from the collection basin to the interior cavity of the hollow body, such that as liquid reaches a preset level in the collection basin, the liquid flows via the inflow opening into the interior cavity of the hollow body. Pinhole outflow openings are provided to slowly bleed liquids from the interior cavity at the second end of the hollow body.
