Couplers for hair coloring compositions for oxidative dyeing of hair are compounds of the formula (1) wherein X is CI, Br, I, or R4SO4; R3 is a C1 to C22 alkyl group or a C1 to C22 mono or dihydroxyalkyl group; R1 and R2 are each independently a C1 to C4 alkyl group; and R4 a C1 to C22 alkyl group or a C1 to C22 mono or dihydroxyalkyl group.
