A coupling beam, and method constructing multi-story buildings. A coupling beam design for use in coupled shear walls in multi-story buildings utilizes groups of rebar. Multiple rebar groups are provided. First and second sets of a first rebar group have first ends extending into adjacent sheer walls, and second ends within the coupling beam. First and second sets of a second rebar group have first ends extending into adjacent sheer walls, and second ends within the coupling beams. The first and second sets of the first group of rebar, and similar third and fourth sets within a second group, are provided in a configuration that ends at or near the middle of the coupling beam, thus providing a open or partial-X reinforcing steel design. Coupling beams utilizing this design may include transverse reinforcement, such as stirrups, hoops, or cross-ties to restrain the concrete and provide a confined beam structure, as well as additional vertical reinforcement. A method is provided for constructing multi-story buildings having a core and space around the core. The earthquake resistance of such buildings is as good as or better than conventional construction, while construction costs are reduced, and additional usable floor space is provided.
