A protective cover protects an electrical outlet when cutting an opening for the outlet in a sheet of drywall. The cover has a substantially flat cover plate for protecting the electrical outlet and a rigid and perpendicular spike affixed to the cover plate. The spike has a sharp end for penetrating through the sheet of drywall. The cover includes one or more retaining members sized to be inserted inside the electrical outlet to thereby retain the cover plate on the electrical outlet when the drywall is being cut and further adapted to be removed from the electrical outlet when the opening in the drywall has been fully cut. The cover protects the wires in the outlet and enables the builder to easily locate the periphery of the box. Since the cover is not fastened with screws, it is quick and easy to install and remove.
