2062784 9101578 PCTABS00003 A spring loaded cover for indoor receptacles such as an electrical outlet is provided to prevent damage to the receptacle and electric shock to children resulting from insertion of objects into an electrical receptacle. The cover has a base plate (1) having longitudinal flanges (4) extending from its top surface. Preferably two cover plates (2) have longitudinal slots (6) which coact with the flanges (4) of the base plate to allow the cover plates (2) to slide relative to the base plate (1). Springs (7) force the cover plates (2) to a closed and locked position upon release, or upon removal of a plug from the receptacle. Stop means (14, 13) on the cover (2) and base (1) plates limit the travel of the cover plates (2), and resilient locking means (15, 17) engage the cover plates (2) when in the covered position.
