ABSTRACT A method for constructing basement and foundation walls, and an apparatus having a design particularly useful in such a method. The apparatus is a crane system which includes a carrier, such as a trailer unit, having an elongated bridge carried thereon which is movable to an extended position wherein the outer end is positioned away from the trailer. A travel unit is movable along the bridge and has a boom with a load carrying device carried at its outer end. Racks are mounted along the sides of the trailer platform for holding panels used to make up the pouring forms for the walls. In operation, the trailer is located adjacent the site of construction, such as next to the excavation dug for a residential basement, and the bridge is extended to a horizontal position in which the boom of the travel unit on the bridge can reach a major portion or all of the area of walls under construction. The panels are removed from the racks and fastened together on the platform to form sections or gangs which are then lifted, one at a time, and lowered into position for pouring, the individual sections then being fastened together in their final position for pouring. Whether it is necessary to re-position the bridge during the installation of the wall forms depends on the size of the building project relative to the crane system. When the form construction is complete the crane system can then be used to transport the concrete from a mixer to the forms, and after the concrete has set, the forms can be lifted and carried back to the trailer platform by the travel unit. The final disassembling of the forms is carried out, and after cleaning, the panels are replaced on the racks. The crane system can then be moved to the next construction site. The method and apparatus provide for an efficient handling of the forms with a minimum of manual maneuvering of the heavy parts used in making the forms, and the major assembling and disassembling of the forms being carried out in a convenient work station on the trailer rather than in the excavated area.
