ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A crash sensor (10) for automobiles of the type having a movable mass (20) damped by air viscosity has switch contacts (32,80,90) that compensate for changes of air viscosity with temperature, a venting valve (22,36,38) that provides improved contact closure, simplified sealing between the movable mass and a tubein which it moves, and a simplified overall design. The movable mass incorporates the aforementioned venting valve and ducts (120) for viscously conducting air displaced by its movement. The flow of air through the ducts may be further controlled by a valve (25). The switch contacts consist of thermally responsive material. The distance the mass moves before reaching the contacts varies with temperature. The contacts are electrically connected with lead wires (68,78) and a diagnostic resistor (138) by attachment to feedthrough conductors (60,70). The unstressed positions of the contacts are adjusted during manufacture to accurately determine the movement required for switch closure. The crash sensor is calibrated during manufacture by adjusting the number of ducts.
