ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE CREATING ALTERED FLORAL MORPHOLOGY IN TRANSGENIC PLANTS AND USES THEREFOR The present invention relates to transgenic plants in which floral development is altered, particularly plants in which petal number is increased (i.e., petal number is greater than in the corresponding naturally-occurring or wild type plant) or otherwise altered, as in plants which are sterile. Transgenic plants of the present invention contain DNA which encodes all or a portion of a protein essential for floral development and when present in plant cells, results in altered floral development, particularly enhanced floral development (e.g., increased petal number) and/or sterile plants. The present invention also relates to methods of producing plants with altered floral development, exogenous DNA sequences whose presence in a plant results in altered floral development and vectors or constructs which include DNA useful for producing recombinant plants with altered floral development. Seeds produced by plants which contain exogenous DNA encoding a protein which is required for floral development, such as AG DNA in the sense orientation or exogenous DNA which has been altered in such a manner that it encodes an altered form of a protein required for floral development, such as altered AG DNA, are also the subject of the present invention.
