Abstract of the Disclosure A ratchet mechanism for mounting on a tool having a pair of pivotal- ly connected handles comprises a kit of parts for mounting on the tool between the handles and comprising a ratchet plate, a releasable pawl and a guard plate adapted to resist non-rotational movement of an arm of the ratchet plate. In use the ratchet mechanism ensures full closure of the tool but can be released by the tool operator at an intermediate position.
