CROP HARVESTING MACHINE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A machine for harvesting and conditioning a hay crop includes a header for cutting the standing crop which includes a pair of drapers carrying the cut crop toward a central discharge opening of the header. The crop from the header is dropped through the discharge opening onto the ground. Immediately rearwardly of the header and aligned with the discharge opening is a conditioning section including a pair of nip rollers. The crop is lifted from the ground into the nip rollers by a rotating pickup roller including a plurality of elongate flexible blades extending along the length of the roller and extending outwardly therefrom in axial planes. The use of the pickup roller lifts the crop from the ground into the nip of the conditioner rolls and avoids contact of the conditioner rolls with the ground which could cause damage.
