A swath pulling and compacting apparatus is used with a swather for pulling crop from the swather discharge opening and compacting the discharged swath. The apparatus includes a roller with a cylindrical center section and two flared end sections mounted behind the swather so that the center section will float behind the discharge opening to press down on a swath discharged through the opening. Crop pulling fingers are mounted in the roller and are distributed about its centre section. The fingers are rotatable with the roller. As the fingers approach the discharge opening of the swather they move to projected positions extending from the roller As the fingers move away from the discharge opening they move to retracted positions substantially withdrawn into the roller. A roller drive rotates the roller about a lateral axis across the back of the swather.
