A B S T R A C T The invention relates to a cross-linked, water-absorb- ent polymer obtainable by the polymerization of a mix- ture consisting of a) 60-99%-wt. unsaturated, polymer- izable monomers with acid groups which are neutralized to the extent of at least 30 mol-%, b) 0-37%-wt. mono- mers copolymerizable with a), c) 0.1-3.0%-wt. of a cross-linking agent and d) 0-10%-wt. of a water-solu- ble polymer, in which polymerization is conducted with a redox catalyst system containing formamidine sulfin- ic acid as reducing agent. The polymer is distinguish- ed by a retention of greater than or equal to 23 g 0.9% aqueous NaCl-solution per 1 g of polymer, an ab- sorption of greater than or equal to 26 g 0.9% aque- ous NaCl-solution per 1 g of polymer at a load of 20 g/cm2 and a residual monomer content of less than 700 ppm, and preferably less than 500 ppm. The invention also relates to the use of this polymer in the pro- duction of hygiene articles.
